Do trends ruin good ideas?

We recently stayed at a gorgeous airbnb by the beach and I remember staring at the (terrazzo) tiles in the bathroom, astonished by just how beautiful the concept of terrazzo is. Then I quickly snapped back into reality and reminded myself that terrazzo is done.

How sad is that. Terrazzo should never have been ‘in’ because by nature, being ‘in’ means you’ve got to go ‘out’ and thats just a damn waste of a good idea.

Terrazzo is always a good idea

I’ve always put my nose up to trends. Anything that is unlucky enough to become a trend is sadly already on its way out. And its such a shame when good ideas get caught up in this wasteful cycle.

Good ideas should be given immunity from trend.

Embroidery, tapestry, stripes, brass (or any metal or mix of metals for that matter), florals, these are things are eternally immune from the word trend.

Immune: Stripes

Same goes for stone. I hate that Viola had a moment. I wish it had slipped under the radar so that it was never ‘in’ because in my mind, it will never ever be ‘out’.

Don’t ask me if burl is on its way in or out. Burl is never in - and burl will never be out. Burl, I think we can all agree, is perennially beautiful with its swirling grain patterns and depth of colour that seem almost otherworldly. Burl and the word trend should never be used in the same sentence.

Pieces you love, no matter how bizarre, are always a Yes

How exhausting to have to change your home decor every season as you start finding the pieces you bought last season are now not on trend. Not to mention the L(andfill) word.

My philosophy is to lean into what you love, without having to seek permission from anyone around you - and to boldly follow the beat of your own drum and dress however the hell you please - and decorate your home with the same abandon.

You’ll end up a curator of beauty and a creator of an inspired life, empowered by an allegiance with your truest creative self - to a sense of limitless possibility and inspiration.

Please never make this feeling trendy.
